Moxie-On-Netflix_-The-Upcoming-Path-breaking-Teenage-Movie.jpg

2021's "Moxie", directed by Amy Poehler, tells the story of a bunch of contemporary teens engaging in some Revolution Grrl Style after one of the characters get inspired by her Mom's collection of riot grrl records and zines. Joining Kevin and Mike to discuss the film is Kevin's wife Emilie to provide some background on the whole riot grrl scene. There's not a ton of skateboarding in this one, but pro skater Nico Hiraga plays the skateboarding romantic interest. Throw some Bikini Kill records on the turntable, break out some old fanzines, and download our latest episode.

mvp2.jpg

2001's "MVP 2: Most Vertical Primate" finds Jack, the hockey-playing chimpanzee from the first "Most Vertical Primate" film, leaving his ice skates behind for the exciting world of professional skateboarding. Along the way he befriends both a wayward orphan boy and former "Family Feud" host Richard Karn, competes in a skateboarding tournament, and still finds time to play a ton of hockey as well. Truly, this is the "Casablanca" of skateboarding chimpanzee films.

Episode 14 - Mumford / Mallrats: The Jason Lee Episode

gleaminglee.jpg

1999's Mumford is a bizarre comedy/drama about a small town and the fake therapist who shakes it up and we mostly discuss it because it features Jason Lee skateboarding in it. We also talk about Lee's big breakout role in Kevin Smith's Mallrats (which features no skateboarding) and his days as a pro skateboarder, including his work in "Video Days", the seminal skateboarding video directed by a young Spike Jonez. All of that makes this more of an overall chat about Jason Lee's status as the pro skateboarder who had the biggest impact as an actor than a straight episode about Mumford. Still, we hope you enjoy. Grab yourself a chocolate covered pretzel (they're a little melty, but damn are they exquisite!) and give it a listen!

Episode 13 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

turtles.jpg

1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (based on the independent comic book series) was the most successful independent film of all time when it was released. A bonkers hodge-podge of pizza, ninjutsu, toxic waste, and skateboarding men in giant rubber turtle suits. Kevin and Mike discuss the history of the franchise and dive into their first live-action big-screen adventure. Discussed: pizza snobs, Robbie Rist, the obscure college radio show "Moshing with a Meatball", Gang Green, and the stuntwork of skateboarder Reggie Barnes. Also: Stay after the closing music to hear Mike's thoughts on a recent viral video of Werner Herzog's reactions to skateboarding. Turtle power!

Episode 12 - Dogtown and Z-Boys / Lords of Dogtown

dogtown.jpg

It's a double feature! Kevin and Mike watch the 2001 skateboarding documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys and then also watch the 2005 movie Lords of Dogtown which tells the same story using actors, stunt doubles, and a bizarre Heath Ledger performance! Thrill to our hosts' examination of what gets lost in adaptation and what skateboarding enthusiast Mike and non-skateboarding enthusiast Kevin think of both films.

Episode 11 - Back to the Beach

backbeaca.jpg

Kevin and Mike watch and discuss 1987's "Back to the Beach", a parody of and homage to 60s beach party movies starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. This movie has everything - beach punks, an adolescent kid who dresses like Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford, Dick Dale's unfortunate haircut, Pee-Wee Herman, and even a modicum of skateboarding. Also: Annette and Fishbone invent ska music! Kevin talks about his formative crush on Marta Kristen's mermaid from "Beach Blanket Bingo" and Michael talks about how alien California surf culture seemed to a kid growing up in Woonsocket, RI. Cowabunga!

It's a holiday spooktacular as Kevin and Mike watch the made-for-Netflix feature "The Christmas Chronicles", which features Kurt Russell as a Santa Claus who delivers Bones Brigades skateboards and engages in impromptu blues numbers while stuck in jail. Also discussed: Whether or not Clarence Clemens ever got that saxophone. Pour yourself a mug of hot chocolate and get ready to be immersed in yuletide cheer!

Episode 8 - Hard Ticket to Hawaii

hardticket.jpg

We're back! This time Kevin and Mike tackle 1987's "Hard Ticket to Hawaii", a direct-to-video-and-late-night-premium-cable action film featuring a mutant snake puppet, a frisbee-related beheading, enough former Playmates to fill a dozen Whitesnake videos, and one of the wildest skateboard-related sequences ever committed to celluloid. Kevin talks about the bizarre career of director Andy Sidaris and Mike provides insight into skateboarder Russell Howell’s whole deal.

Episode 7 - Back to the Future

backtothefuture-1.png

Back to the Future is a beloved science fiction comedy movie from the 1980s with a surprisingly large amount of skateboarding in it. Kevin and Mike discuss how much they like this movie, Kevin's disappointed with the sequels, Mike's desire to emulate Alex P. Keaton in his scholastic career, the script, the cast, the obligatory lamentation that we are now further away from 1985 than 1985 was from 1955, and Marty McFly's invention of the skateboard. Set your flux capacitor for 1.21 gigawatts of movie/skateboarding talk and give this nonsense a listen!

Episode 6 - V/H/S Viral

vhsviral.jpg

In our efforts to find a spooky movie with some skateboarding we settled on the found footage horror anthology film "V/H/S Viral" - a film we did not enjoy but that does have a whole segment devoted to skateboarders who fight monster cultists in Tijuana. We also wound up discussing a lot of other scary movies that we *do* like such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Poltergeist, Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the genuinely terrifying Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace. Happy Halloween, y'all!

Episode 5 - Skate Kitchen

skatekitchen.jpg

This week's skateboard movie is Crystal Moselle's Skate Kitchen from 2018, about a teenage girl who befriends a group of female skateboarders in New York City by connecting with them via Instagram. It's inspired by the real group of female skaters who call themselves "Skate Kitchen", and features the group's members playing fictionalized versions of themselves. Also discussed: gatekeeping, poseurs, the member of the skateboard crew who films everything, parents (THEY JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND), and getting credit-carded. This movie is much, much better than Police Academy 4.

Episode 4 - Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol

policeacademy4.jpg

Kevin and Mike tackle 1987's Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol which, along with the usual hijinx from Mahoney and the gang, features an extended skateboarding sequence with the Bones Brigade. A terrible movie with some pretty great skateboarding. Also discussed: Ninjas, backdoor pilots, stunt doubles, The Facts of Life, that episode of The Brady Bunch about Ken Berry and the three orphan kids, the multi-faceted career of Leonard Nimoy, and the career trajectory of one Steven Robert Guttenberg. Clueless

clueless-index-1594932028.jpg

It's 1995 and the impossibly rich kids of Beverly Hills are playing matchmaker, wearing Dr. Seuss hats, and navigating teenage life in Amy Heckerling's Clueless! Kevin and Mike tackle the role skateboard kid Travis Birkenstock (played by Breckin Meyer) plays in the film and how that maps to the experience of being "a skateboard kid" in high school. Also discussed: Jane Austen, the stupid late 90s swing revival, whether or not Wallace Shawn patronizes Hardees, and how much they both like this movie.

Thrashin’

thrashin.jpg

Kevin and Mike kick things off by watching Josh Brolin in the 80s skateboard classic Thrashin'! They discuss the proper amount of badass eye makeup to wear to a joust, why Meat Loaf was a weird choice to record the theme song to a movie about skateboarding, Kevin's lack of appreciation for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and whether or not skating off a ramp at 64 miles per hour is something that should be attempted at home. Next week we'll be discussing Amy Heckerling's Clueless.
